What if those penny trays and tip jars at cash registers were for exactly this purpose? What if we just dumped all of our coin change there and people could feel free to use any of the coins in there for this purpose, and that instead of pennies, they would be loonies and toonies and quarters?

Put yourself in this imaginary scenario…

There has been a disaster in, say, New Orleans. Everyone working on the ground has said that the best thing people can do to help is provide cash.

You have $100 in your pocket. Faced with the implications of what Katrina means, what do you do with the money?

Fill the gas tank of course.

(I have a better idea…take the bus, or take a week off work and put that money to better use)
