As far as I know it's just the same as everyone else. There are First Nations financial institutions like Peace Hills Trust that might do things differently, but off-reserve, private land is the same for everyone.

Re: Your comment "As for mortgages, I can teach you all about how to get a mortgage, but if you live on a reserve you can’t get one, because you can’t put land up for collateral. End of story."

Are there any specific agencies/organizations who are helpful in assisting FN people in obtaining mortgages off-reserve, or is the situation the same as for non-FN people?

[...] Last week was Canada’s National Aboriginal Day and today is the National Day of Action. You could say that we had the traditional conference last week followed by the unconference this week. Chris Corrigan does a lot of work with First Nations and has written a counter post to a recent article in the Globe & Mail by Margaret Wente. As someone who is close to the problem, but also has a systems view, this is worth reading, especially today: Those of you that have read my ramblings over the years will know how I feel about education. Learning how to read is a good thing. Learning how to learn is a good thing. Education is another thing. It is the last sacred cow in indigenous communities, the idea that the school system actually sustains the problems that our communities face. We could talk a lot about this, but I think schools in general don’t hold the solution to all the problems. Learning does though. That’s what the Elders say anyway, not that Margaret Wente puts much stock in them. [...]

Right on, Chris! Same thing is happening on this side of the world. The Federal Govt, facing an election in a few months, has decided after 11 years of totally ignoring indigenous peoples - no that's not right, they haven't ignored them, they have pretty much destroyed any gains made over the previous decades, dismantles indigenous decion-making processes etc etc. Now, they decide that action is required on child abuse and neglect. Of course action is required - but the govt has decided what's best, how it shoukd be done, and has sent additional resources (aka police) to indigenous communities to 'facililitate' health checks. The heavy foot of colonialism and paternalism reigns still!!!
Cheers
