Hi Chris. I love what you say here, and this resonates strongly.
There might be, for want of a better term, a learning style consideration. Not all participants of events will be as thoughtful and connectivist as thee. Would be interesting to use what you say here as a base, as opposed to presumption of need for action requirement, and then build on that into activity around deciding how to appropriately articulate the connections between the learning experience and individual or group contexts to which the learning may need to be applied. Ha. You know, that's exactly what I am doing by writing this come to think of it. Thanks! And maybe that is it. I am not actually articulating the action I am taking away from this, I am articulating my learning or thought process. Maybe it is the need to 'plenary' the actions that is wearisome rather than the process of imagining them.

I can relate to this Chris. With one conference I am involved in we do have an 'action space' at the end of the day but it is more about identifying the ideas bubbling up in the room and we won't be developing any action plans (we are offering to host a separate smaller gathering with those who want to take their ideas further together after the conference).

Where we have focused more of our attention is on the harvest from the day and have a really lovely harvest plan that will create a post-conference PDF to help tell the story of what happened that day. I wonder if sometimes the cry for action plans and the like can be explored through a good conversation on harvest?

I loved Margaret Wheatley's new book, SO FAR FROM HOME and her recent YOUTUBE videos. While her principles are wonderful, we are living in exceptionally divided and turbulent times. She addresses our discouragement and suggests becoming warriors for compassion and insight.

Chris, I am disturbing by what I perceive to be a pattern of small community disruption, particularly related to development and environmental issues, where the tranquility of a small community can be torn apart by conflicting values and interests. I have seen specific examples in Shawnigan Lake, Gabriola Island, Galiano Island, Saltspring Island, and it sounds like Bowen Island too.

At the same time there are public engagement processes such as www.wisedemocracy.org that can help heal cynicism and empower real dialog to solve what appear to be impossible obstacles. It seems to me that larger communities, Victoria, Vancouver, have divisive issues, but there is more capacity to absorb/balance the conflict.

Too bad to hear about your frustrations Chris. Lots of good stuff going on in the Lower Mainland. Vancouver is set to release its Engaged City initiative (http://vancouver.ca/your-government/engaged-city-task-force.aspx, Surrey just launched City Speaks, Translink and Vancouver Coastal Health have won international awards for excellence in public consultation.

It's not about knowing how to do it right, its all about political will and respect.

Good luck with that one - rmd

Peeked back at this to prep for a meeting tomorrow. Great questions here that aren't necessarily in the Chaordic Stepping Stones / 8 Breaths; really appreciating the simplicity and effectiveness. They are now folded into my hobbit tools!
